Typically galvanized sheet roofs are used mainly for agricultural buildings where rust is less of an issue and costs must be kept low. Iron or steel can be coated with zinc. The mixture of zinc and aluminum protects the galvalume metal against corrosion and rust helping galvalume typically last much longer than galvanized steel. Studies show that when used on a residential house that a galvalume metal roof will outlast a galvanized metal roof by almost double. Galvanization or commonly referred to as galvanized is a protective zinc coating that is applied to a steel or iron substrate through a hot dip galvanizing process.
